Eight Key Immune Support Supplements You May Be Missing

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) and Glutathione

Tissues and cells involved with immune function are highly energy-dependent and require an adequate supply of CoQ10 for optimal function. And the evidence is clear- studies have shown that CoQ10 has a knack for supercharging your immune response.

The researchers involved found that CoQ10 levels were significantly lower in patients with acute influenza infection than in healthy controls.

In 2012, researchers had examined the link between CoQ10 levels and clinical outcome in children hospitalized with pandemic influenza H1N1. This study similarly suggested that CoQ10 levels in children with influenza were significantly decreased compared with healthy controls.

CoQ10 steps in as a key player, helping to fuel immune cells, such as T cells and macrophages, enabling them to carry out their functions more efficiently. All the evidence suggests that ubiquinone also promotes high blood levels of cytotoxic T lymphocytes which destroy infected cells. One study from 1993, which evaluated the effect of coenzyme Q10 on immune response, concluded that the T4/T8 ratio of lymphocytes increased following administration of coenzyme Q10.

While you might find some CoQ10 in your diet—think meat, poultry, and fish—the amounts typically aren’t enough to make a real difference. With the average daily intake hovering around a mere 3 to 5 mg, you’re not getting the Co Q10 level needed to truly elevate your immune defenses.

When choosing supplements it is advised to look for Ubiquinol (which is the reduced form of CoQ10 and known for its exceptional bioavailability) instead of Ubiquinon as not all of it is absorbed in the gut. The more easily-assimilated ubiquinol therefore offers the advantage of being a directly active compound.

For those who may not get enough of these nutrients through diet alone, supplementation can be a convenient way to bridge the gap and support overall immune function.

To ensure you’re taking a supplement that isn’t oxidized, choose one that contains an antioxidant such as vitamin E. Also select a supplement with the highest omega-3 content — ideally more than 0.3 grams per serving. Furthermore, since EPA and DHA have more health benefits than ALA, choose a supplement that uses fish oil or algal oil, rather than flaxseed oil.
